“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” - Dr. Seuss

My littlest is four and doesn't see much need to read. His favorite character is The Very Hungry Caterpillar. He sleeps with his stuffed one every night. And has adventures with it during the day. I was searching through education sites to find something that might get him excited to get learning words and came across Sight Words that you can make into a caterpillar.

So here's the experiment. Caterpillar sight words. And I definitely am unconcerned about longevity with this lasting, since it is an experiment after all. I printed the sight words on notebook paper -- cheap, I tell you. You can see some of the circles have the standard holes that come with notebook paper. Some of the circles got cut off with the edge of the paper. And one of the circles got eaten by said four year old before it made it to its final resting place in the caterpillar. I also used cheap paper we had for crafts for the background and good old painter's tape to adhere it to the fridge. If this becomes a hit, I will move it to the playroom.

You can get your much better looking Caterpillar Site Words here:

With the remaining 36 words, I taped them to ping pong balls hoping to make a fun game out of learning words. So far it's been a hit because he really likes to play with balls. But as for learning new words, I'd say in the two days he has had them, he hasn't filed away new words yet.
36 Ping Pong balls cost 10 bucks at Target.

My hope for this experiment is that he enjoys the learning games and decides it's worth the time to learn and wants to do it.
